Competitive trait hierarchies of native communities and invasive propagule pressure consistently predict invasion success during grassland establishment

چکیده

Abstract Invasive non-native plants challenge ecosystems restoration, and understanding the factors that determine establishment of invasive is crucial to improve restoration outcomes. However, drivers invasibility plant communities are not sufficiently clear, combined effects understood. Therefore, we investigated contribution main invasion success during early phases i.e., biotic resistance, propagule pressure, environmental fluctuations. We compared these in a series mesocosms experiments using designed grasslands as model system, Solidago gigantea species. Two grassland were according competitive trait hierarchies with different sowing patterns, reflecting variation resistance. then manipulated invader pressure applied scenarios fluctuation, flood, heat, N fertilization. biomass was considered proxy for success, while native represented success. There consistent resistance S. via three experiments. Communities dominated by species high-competition traits more resistant regardless fluctuation. Clumped seeding community reduced invasibility, whereas high density increased invasion. The fluctuation less context-dependent, thus playing secondary role when Restoration initiatives on impacted should consider restored key driver importance controlling further arrivals assembly.

Propagule pressure, Allee effects and the probability of establishment of an invasive species (Bythotrephes longimanus)

Predicting establishment of exotic species is a central goal of invasion biology, and is dependent upon propagule pressure and population processes. We introduced invading spiny water fleas, Bythotrephes longimanus at different propagule pressures into 19 experimental enclosures, following populations over asexual generations, resting egg production, and emergence in the following year. We inte...

The risk of establishment of aquatic invasive species: joining invasibility and propagule pressure.

Invasive species are increasingly becoming a policy priority. This has spurred researchers and managers to try to estimate the risk of invasion. Conceptually, invasions are dependent both on the receiving environment (invasibility) and on the ability to reach these new areas (propagule pressure). However, analyses of risk typically examine only one or the other. Here, we develop and apply a joi...

Determinants of plant establishment success in a multispecies introduction experiment with native and alien species.

Determinants of plant establishment and invasion are a key issue in ecology and evolution. Although establishment success varies substantially among species, the importance of species traits and extrinsic factors as determinants of establishment in existing communities has remained difficult to prove in observational studies because they can be confounded and mask each other. Therefore, we cond...

Invasion, competitive dominance, and resource use by exotic and native California grassland species.

The dynamics of invasive species may depend on their abilities to compete for resources and exploit disturbances relative to the abilities of native species. We test this hypothesis and explore its implications for the restoration of native ecosystems in one of the most dramatic ecological invasions worldwide, the replacement of native perennial grasses by exotic annual grasses and forbs in 9.2...
